2023 Marcel Boiteux Lecture: Shmuel S. Oren (University of California, Berkeley)

The economists in the S.E.R.G. wanted to create a prestigious event to honour outstanding contributions to energy economics. In practice, the event consists of inviting a leading figure from the world of energy and environmental economics to CentraleSupélec each year to give a lecture.

In agreement with his family, this event is called the Marcel Boiteux Annual Lecture at CentraleSupélec, and will pay tribute to the former Chairman of EDF, who died last year and celebrated his centenary a short while ago. During his career, Marcel Boiteux taught economics at CentraleSupélec, and produced an internationally recognised body of scientific work in the tradition of French economic engineers. In particular, his contributions laid the foundations for the economics of the electricity sector.

Through this event, the institution intends to pay tribute to the legacy of Marcel Boiteux and in particular to his concern to pass on to young engineers the elements of applied economics that enable them to think about the development of an industrial sector.

In agreement with Mr Boiteux's family, the profile of the personalities invited to speak at this conference must extend the example set by Mr Boiteux, by combining at least three qualities:
1. Undeniable and internationally recognised scientific expertise in economics;
2. The fact that they have worked to solve concrete problems that have had an impact on the operation of the energy industries;
3. A teaching and transmission activity.

On the afternoon of 18 April 2023, the first guest was Prof. Shmuel Oren (U. California, Berkeley - https://oren.ieor.berkeley.edu). Prof. Oren is an eminent member of the international academic scene. A specialist in operational research and the economics of the electricity sector, his work on pricing (in particular with Robert Wilson, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics) has set standards and earned him numerous awards (including the Harold Hotelling Medal from INFORMS, the learned society for operational research).
