Olivier Massol

Biography: Olivier Massol was born in 1978 and is a Full Professor of Economics at CentraleSupélec.

He also serves as the Head of the Energy Transition Program at the Climate Economics Chair, and non-resident research fellow at City, University of London.

With 25 years of experience studying the economics of the energy sector, his research and teaching activities focus on energy, environmental and natural resources economics, as well as industrial organization, and technology policy.

Before joining CentraleSupelec in 2024, Olivier was a Faculty member at IFP School (2007-2024) where he became a Full Professor in 2021. He began his career in industry, working as an economist at the General Economic Studies department of a utility company (2000-2007).

Olivier received a PhD. in Economics (City, University of London), and a tenure (HDR) (Paris-Dauphine). He also earned an “Ingénieur Civil des Mines” degree (Saint-Etienne, 1998), an MSc. degree in Energy Economics (IFP School), and an MRes. in Industrial Organization (Paris-Dauphine University). In 2003, he was knighted “Chevalier dans l'ordre des Palmes Academiques” by the French government.

Research Topics: Olivier’s research interests are in the fields of the economics of energy and natural resources; the modeling of energy systems, infrastructure regulation, and technology policy (e.g., CCUS, CDR, Hydrogen). Some of his scholarly contributions also focus on price formation in commodity markets and international energy trade.

Methodologically, he works with a strong emphasis on the application of quantitative techniques (microeconomics, econometrics, operations research, game theory, and engineering) to inform regulatory practices, guide policymaking, and support investor decision-making.  

Teaching Activities: Olivier’s courses and seminars are about Energy Economics, Industrial Organization, Environmental Economics, and Energy Modelling.

Management Duties: Olivier is Head of the Energy Transition Program at the Climate Economics Chair, Executive Director of the Chair “The Economics of Gases” and serves as Vice-Chairman of the IAEE International Conference to be held in Paris in June 2025.

He also serves as a council member of the French Association of Energy Economics, and on several supervisory boards.
